Recently, while visiting my mother in Des Moines Iowa, I had a chance to visit the Des Moines Art Centre... great collection of contemporary art housed in equally world class architecture. Eliel Saarinen designed the original architecture of the centre which was completed in 1948. Further wings were added in 1968 and 1985 by I.M. Pei and Richard Meier respectively.

This Easter weekend an Exhibition organised by my friend, Brooke Bobridge, opened at Swings & Roundabouts Winery in Margaret river. Brooke organised artists and designers from different fields to artistically 'go to town' on some wine barrel lids. I was asked to do one of the lids and have previously posted a few shots of the work in progress. I had one of my designs laser cut into the lid, then re-worked the laser cutting with some Japanese wood carving tools.

I didn't manage to get down to exhibition opening but did however get links to some pics of the artworks hanging at the winery. The art will remain on display throughout the Margaret River Wine Region Festival, until 12th of April.

No Culture Icons Photography Exhibition, Fremantle

Went to the opening of this last night. Well worth the ride+train down to Freo! Be quick on this one (25th – 28th of March only)

2010 No Culture Icons, in association with the 2010 Foto Freo Fringe Festival is delighted to take this opportunity to invite you to the 2010 No Culture Icons touring exhibit in Fremantle, Western Australia. This show will be the first leg of the debut international exhibition from the No Culture Icons Collective.

This exhibition is an exclusive opportunity to be the first to see a selected showcase of new photo based works by 18 leading local and international artists from Australia, Europe, China and the United States. Including works from Charlie Engman (USA), Jon Stanley Austin (UK), Mikhail Wassmer (Germany), Jia Zhu (China), Nat Urazmetova (Russia), T Reilly Hodgson (Canada), Jackson Eaton (AU) and Alistair Dickinson (AU).

The No Culture Icons Collective (Australia) exhibition launches 7pm Wednesday, 24th of March upstairs at the Il Cibo Cafe (2 Market Street Fremantle, Western Australia) and is running 10am – 4pm from the 25th – 28th of March. The exhibition will then be touring throughout the United Kingdom with Liam Henry (founder of the No Culture Icons Collective) on dates soon to be released.

Recycling Tees

I recently salvaged a quantity of un-sellable Tees. It was such a shame to see great artwork from some of Perth's finest artists go to waste. The salvaged material provided the perfect material for pencil cases.

Wine Barrel Laser Cut

Today I got a chance to put the laser cutter at Curtin’s Art Department to the test. I had initially hoped to cut solid shapes however the machine is limited to lines only. The design was transformed to strokes and after some test cuts the cutting began. Cutting lines only instead of solids means the gradient is very subtle. I am going to try rework back into the timber in order to get the graphics to ‘pop’. Thanks a million to Jacob Ogden Smith for helping us today!

New Space

I vacated the Mc Ness studios mid December and after a few months of working from home I am now pleased to say I have re-located to a fantastic new space. The studio, on William street Northbridge, is just above The Butcher Shop. Already inhabited by the great folks, Jesse and Lake, we spent a few hours re-organising the space on Labour day. The space now comfortably fits 5 generous work stations. Here's to a successful and creative new year!

Jumping the gun

It turns out I jumped the gun on this one. The laser cutter in the workshop I am using has dimensions of 600mm x 450mm. So the 600mm x 600mm template I made to position the wine barrel lid is useless.

The approach now is to divide the lid where the slat and dowel joints are loose and cut the image in two parts. Lets hope the design lines up when the parts are re-assembled!

The laser cutter can be adjusted to cut at different power settings. I have allocated 4 different colours to correspond with these settings with red being the highest and yellow the lowest. This should result in a subtle gradient across the lid.

'Heart City Design' kicked off its fun range of Tees early this morning (an ungodly 6:30am) at Cottesloe for the start of the 2010 Rottnest Channel Swim. Hot off the press 'I Heart Rotto' Tees were being hawked.

Good luck to Luen and Louise whose team, as I write, are doing the swim. If you spot them at the pub on Rotto say hi! (they will be sporting HCD fresh produce!)

We have just wound up the Curtin first year Architecture and Interior design Studio. As of last night the first years have some scale architecture models on display in Fremantle as part of walking tour and exhibition entitled 'Fremantle on the EDGE'. Get down to High Street and Myers shopfronts to check out their models.

Fremantle on the EDGE is a first time interdisciplinary event which was carried out as a forerunner to the establishment of a Creative Arts Biennale to be centered within the historic port City of Fremantle, Western Australia. The project brought together internationally renowned Visiting Artists Maria Blaisse + Cocky Eek from the Netherlands, practicing art and design staff, together with students from Architecture + Interior Architecture + Fashion + Furniture + Product + Jewellery + Graphic Design.

I introduced a little colour to my screen screen printing. Manual painting of a few colours before screening over the top. The results are not too bad. I probably need to re-work into the yellow parts with black Paint Pen as the screened acrylic didn't take to the yellow.

Architectural design is a comprehensive and complex process so it is very difficult to compare projects, especially if the site, program and context are completely different.
